When Should I Replace My Mattress? Top 4 Signs To Look Out For!

Our mattress has to be one of the most intimate pieces in our homes: it welcomes us for nightly slumber, and greets us in the morning for the start of a brand new day - this can last routinely for about one-third of our lives, or at least as long as the lifespan of our mattress! Depending on the quality of material, a good mattress should be lasting you anywhere between 6-10 years
If your current mattress has reached past its lifespan and you have been having trouble sleeping, it may be time you consider investing in a new mattress!

Here are some insider tips from sleep experts covering 4 signs that it’s time to replace your current mattress:

1.) You’re waking up with back pain

If you have been tossing and turning all night trying to get comfortable but still struggling to fall asleep, it may just be that your current mattress has reached the 8-year mark and is no longer providing you with the proper support and comfort you need.

A lot changes in just a year - in comparison, 8 years is a long-long time! At this point, your mattress has accompanied you through various phases of your life and this includes your weight fluctuations. The weight of an individual sleeping on the mattress has a direct correlation with its support and comfort. If you have been gaining weight or losing weight through the years, you may find that your current mattress has not been feeling as comfortable and supportive.

Example: Let’s assume you were 60KG when you first brought your mattress; you most likely went for a medium-soft density. However, if you have significantly gained weight ever since - you may find yourself needing a more supportive medium-firm mattress to carry the weight of your body. Likewise, if you have lost weight, your current mattress may start to feel too firm and uncomfortable for you!

2.) Your allergies are flaring up

If you happen to notice your allergies lasting for four seasons instead of one, especially first thing in the morning - then it may be a sign that the root cause is right under you. As time goes on, some mattresses can accumulate all sorts of allergens including mould and dust-mites that are most likely aggravating your allergies or asthma.

Have you ever spent a night at a hotel or your friend’s and family’s place and noticed that your allergies just miraculously disappeared? However, the second you’re back sleeping on your own bed – your allergies start acting up again? Even so, you have been cleaning and vacuuming your mattress religiously, but still find yourself having trouble sleeping from the constant sneezing and shortness of breath? It is a sure sign that your mattress is the culprit – and it’s time to consider investing in a new mattress!

Pro Tip
: Aside from mould and dust-mites, your mattress material may also be the cause of your allergies. Traditional mattresses made of materials such as polyurethane (PU) foam and memory foam are chemically treated with VOCs and heavy metals that are known to trigger allergies.

3.) You’re not getting quality sleep

“Happiness is returning to my bed after a long, tiring day.” – said every well-rested sleeper ever!

Everybody needs a good night’s sleep; when you think about unwinding, your mattress should be that one thing you can’t wait to hop on! However, if your mattress has lost its comfort to the point that you’re unable to fall asleep at night and waking up incredibly tired and grumpy, it may be that your body is forced to compensate overnight in order to find a comfortable sleeping position.

Similarly, if you have been experiencing night sweats more than usual when nothing noticeable in your environment has changed - there’s a good chance it's your mattress reaching its expiration date. Depending on the material - as a mattress ages, it starts to soften and slowly lose its ability to allow airflow to the surface. The lack of air circulation promotes a hot and humid environment causing you to sweat through the night. If this is the case, replacing your current mattress could go a long way in improving the quality of sleep!

4.) Your mattress has worn out

Signs of wear and tear to look out for:

  • Springs poking through
  • Sagging
  • Lumps
  • Holes
  • Stains
  • Mould
  • Bed Bugs

Bound to the laws of the natural world - your mattress will lose its ability to provide you proper support as it ages. When this occurs, achieving proper spinal alignment proves more difficult. If you happen to be sleeping on an older spring mattress, chances are the comfort layer has matted down - leading to the experience of uncomfortable pressure points by sleeping directly on the springs.

If you have been sleeping on a memory foam mattress, you may have been noticing that the comfort layer has lost its compression and shape, making the midsection of your body sag into the mattress - creating an unhealthy hammock-like effect on your spine.  If you notice that you’re going to bed feeling just fine - but waking up feeling stiff and sore with back pain, it’s a sign that your mattress needs to be replaced.
